Herkimer County woman pleads guilty in dog neglect case

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Barbara Smith, who was accused of neglecting 12 dogs in Herkimer County, has pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor torture/injuring/not feeding an animal, Herkimer County District Attorney Jeff Carpenter said.

Smith entered the plea on Thursday before a hearing.

According to Carpenter, sentencing will be adjourned until June. Smith is expected to receive three years of probation, during which time she can not own or possess any dogs except for the one she currently owns. She is also expected to have to pay the Herkimer County Humane Society $17,000 for veterinarian bills and confinement costs.

The dogs have now all been surrendered to the care of the Herkimer County Humane Society. The group now has full ownership rights of the dogs.

One of the 12 dogs had to be euthanized because of poor health, the humane society said. Once the other 11 dogs are spayed and neutered, they will be available for adoption.
