Herkimer High School mourns loss of student, will activate crisis plan

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV)- The Herkimer community and school district is mourning the loss of a local teenager after she was killed in a car accident late Friday evening.

16-year-old Katelynn Sweet was the front-seat passenger in the car driven by 18-year-old Haley Shepard of Ilion. Shepard lost control of the car and hit a tree, according to state police.

Sweet was a student at Herkimer High School, where the school district is putting their crisis plan into effect. According to high school Principal Terry Dangle, the crisis team and administration will meet on Sunday and activate their crisis plan for Monday and Tuesday.

According to the district's crisis plan, social workers and councilors will be available Monday and Tuesday in order to meet the needs of Sweet's classmates mourning her loss.

Herkimer County Coroner Brian Roberts pronounced Sweet dead on the scene around 5:00 a.m., after New York State Police finished investigating at the scene.

The results of the investigation have not been announced.
