Herkimer Home hosts annual commemoration of General Nicholas Herkimer

DANUBE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some folks out in Herkimer County had the chance Sunday afternoon to take part in a tradition they look forward to every year, the annual commemoration of General Nicholas Herkimer.  But this year, it almost didn't happen.

Back in May, Governor Paterson ordered a number of parks and historic sites closed in may to save the state some money.
but state quickly, within a week decided to restore the funding, and take it from the Environmental Protection Fund. Park leaders across the state know they may now have to live year to year.

Park Manager tom Kernan says he is grateful state leaders reopened the sites, "it's very important to hold events like this because General Herkimer made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and without people like him, we wouldn't be living in a country where we enjoy the freedoms we have today."
