Herkimer Home open for learning

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Herkimer Home opened its doors for the first ever, "History Day," Friday.
Hundreds of students from all different districts got to experience the home of General Herkimer first hand, and learn about his late 18th century life.
In addition to the actors walking around the grounds, the students learned how to make ropes and clothing.
They also watched a musket demonstration.
"It's something altogether different when you get to experience it with your hands, see it with your eyes," said Matthew MacVittie of the Herkimer Home. "I remember as a kid when I went to state historic sites, it came alive and it was so much more interesting.

"I think that's what developed my interest in history as an adult."
