Herkimer cemetery recommended as historic preservation site

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV/AP) - Preservation authorities have recommended adding 17 listings to the New York and national registers of historic places, including Oak Hill Cemetery in Herkimer.

Being listed can help owners restore and maintain properties because they're eligible for certain public programs, grants and tax credits.

Some former local U.S. Congressmen are buried at Oak Hill including Gaylord Griswold, Michael Hoffman and Donald Mitchell and former U.S. Senator Warner Miller.

Also buried there are U.S. Veterans from nearly every single war including the Revolution and the Civil War.

The last woman hanged in New York State is also buried in the cemetery.

Among other properties the state Board for Historic Preservation says should be listed are the West Endicott Hose Co. No.1 in Broome County, the Sidney Historic District in Delaware County, the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown in Queens, the Shantz Button Factory in Rochester and Trinity Episcopal Church in Syracuse.

Others include Glenn H. Curtiss Memorial High School in Hammondsport, Congregation Tifereth Yehuda Veyisroel in Kerhonkson and Quogue Cemetery on Long Island.

If approved by the state, the sites would be nominated for the national register.
