Herkimer police urge vigilance after three village burglaries

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The Herkimer Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant after three burglaries.

The burglaries took place on Margaret Street, East German Street and Marion Street during the day when residents weren't home. Police ask village residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.

If suspicious activity is spotted, police ask that you do not approach any individuals; call 911 or the police station immediately; observe the area and look for other people or vehicles and to note the license plate of vehicles and descriptions of suspicious people.

If you experience or suspect a burglary, contact the police department immediately and do not enter the residence. Instead, you are advised to go to a safe place such as a neighbor's house or vehicle.

The police department asks residents to take steps toward protecting property such as ensuring the windows and doors are locked when leaving, regardless of how long; making the home look occupied; using curtains to limit the visibility of personal belonging in a home; making a list of valuable items, including serial numbers; never leaving keys under doormats, mailboxes or other typical hiding locations and making sure shrubbery is trimmed to allow greater visibility around doors and windows.

Anyone with information on the burglary investigations is asked to call the Herkimer Police Department at (315) 866-4330. Residents with home surveillance cameras in those areas are asked to contact the police so they may review the cameras. All calls will be kept confidential.
