Herkimer County Jail offer in hands of village board

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - An offer to allow Herkimer County to hook their future jail into the Village of Herkimer's sewer system is now in the hands of the village.

The system needs $1.7 million worth of repairs, according to Herkimer Mayor Mark Ainsworth.

The Herkimer County Legislature approved a proposal Wednesday that would pay the village $800,000 over the course of 20 years. The village would receive $400,000 up front with another $400,000 to be paid over 20 years.

Village of Herkimer Deputy Mayor Gary Hartman said he will not support the offer. Mayor Ainsworth has said before that he also will not support that offer.

Katherine Nichols, a village trustee, said she still has to look over the proposal before she makes a decision on the matter.

NEWSChannel 2 was unable to contact Mark Netti or William Markey, the two other trustees in Herkimer.

The village will have 30 days to make a decision.
