Holiday Inn Express to be built at Utica's Harbor Point

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The owners of a hotel on north Genesee Street in Utica are building another one, just yards south of their first one. The Holiday Inn Express is being built behind Delmonico's Restaurant.

Mayor David Roefaro joined the developers for a soggy groundbreaking Thursday morning, heralding the event as the first groundbreaking of a new structure at Utica's Harbor Point in more than 50 years.

Rakesh Patel, of Vision Hotels, says there are enough overnight visitors to the area to support both of his hotels on north Genesee Street.

"We've been very happy with the city of Utica and the transient business that we have with sport teams, with the colleges, a lot of businesses that are here, with the hospitals and people that brings in. The corporate business is also very important that has jobs in this area too," says Patel.

The hotel will employ about 100 people during the construction phase and the contractor is local, based out of Marcy.

Once complete and open for business, in June, it's expected to employ roughly 25 people.

It's a roughly $3 million project.
