Holiday shoppers help out retailers in Old Forge on 'Small Business Saturday'
(WKTV) - The Saturday after Thanksgiving is known as Small Business Saturday across the United States. It's an effort to urge Americans to support their local businesses, a day after the big box stores get all of the attention on Black Friday.
On this Saturday, shoppers from all over Central and Northern New York and beyond flocked to Old Forge for the annual Adirondack Christmas on Main Street.
Mary McKeon of Little Falls says she comes up every year with family members, "I have my grandchildren and my nieces and nephews." And when asked if she was spending a lot of money she said, "oh yea."
Linda Powell of Wolcott, New York, which is on lake Ontario between Syracuse and Rochester, says she makes the two and a half hour trip every year and is glad to see there's a national effort to support small businesses. She said, "I'm all for small businesses because I was raised in small business."
The bar on Main Street called Tony Harper's Too was jam packed for lunch on Saturday. Manager Albert Kiss says the national effort has definitely helped in Old Forge, "Small business Saturday is great here. It brings a lot of people up from Utica, a lot of people took the train up. Some people took the train up and stayed overnight. All weekend it's been great."
Even Mrs. Claus, in town from the North Pole says Small Business Saturday "Oh, I think it makes it more of a Wonderful Life Christmas, makes you go back to those roots of your childhood."
If you weren't able to get up to Old Forge today, don't worry the Adirondack Christmas on Main Street continues all day on Sunday.
