Humane Society to Cuomo: Fight invasive pigs in NY

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Humane Society of the United States is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign legislation that would make it illegal to import, possess, sell or release invasive wild pigs in New York.

Eurasian boars are commonly known as wild pigs or feral swine and they have established breeding populations around New York state.

Brian Shapiro, New York director for The Humane Society, said the boars too often escape fenced enclosures and wreak havoc on the environment.

Under the measure, which passed the state Legislature, violators would be fined $500 or more.
