Hundreds gather at SUNYIT to honor Alexandra Kogut

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Over 1,200 people took to the paths of SUNYIT, Saturday, in honor of a New Hartford woman who was murdered last year.

Alexandra Kogut was a graduate of New Hartford High School and a freshman at SUNY Brockport when she was killed in her dorm room allegedly by her boyfriend a little more than a year ago.

Saturday, Kogut's memory drew crowds to another SUNY campus in order to participate in the AK 5k Run and Walk.

The event was a way to keep Kogut's memory alive, while at the same time, promoting awareness about domestic violence with the hopes that more cases can be prevented in the future.

Jenifer Bowman, the Race Director, came up with the idea, and created satellite races so that people from all around the country could participate in the event, even if they couldn't be in the Mohawk Valley.

Bowman hopes to make this event a yearly occurrence.

Kogut's Boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21, of New Hartford is being charged with her murder and is slated to appear in court in January.
