NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New Hartford Village Green filled with hundreds of friends of Alexandra Kogut Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil. Holding candles and sharing memories, friends remembered the 18 year-old on the eve of her funeral.

Kogut's funeral is set to get under way at Noon today at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford.

The college freshman was found dead on Saturday in her dorm room at SUNY Brockport. In a police report her boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21 of New Hartford admitted to intentionally killing her.

"Her beautiful smile, always remembering that smile she had, always looking amazing every place she went even when we didn't," said Theano Alvanos, a friend of Alex's and MVCC Freshman.

"She was really infectious, like when she would smile I feel like everyone around her would smile," said Lexie Raynard, a friend of Alex's and SUNY Cortland Freshman. "And she was so kind hearted like she would never say a bad word about anyone she was the first to say 'Oh you look great' or 'You look pretty,' it was just the way she was."

The 2012 graduate of New Hartford High School was captain of the high school swim team and very involved in the community. Wednesday night her friends said the vigil is the community being there for her.

"She would love it, she loved being part of everything, she loved bringing people together," said Raynard.

"She was friends with everyone she loved being with just everyone no matter who you were," said Alvanos.

"She always had out her camera and taking pictures of everything to remember everything by," said Raynard.

Lexie Raynard and Theano Alvanos helped organize the vigil, Wednesday the two were trying to be happy like they said Alex would have wanted.

"We just know that she's looking down on us and we want her to see us smiling," said Raynard.

Kogut's boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, is charged with murder and is due in court in Monroe County on Thursday.
