Ilion children learn about 'Hometown Heroes'

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Ilion Days are here and this week, the summer recreation program is honoring "Hometown Heroes" as part of the celebration.

On Tuesday, Ilion firefighters and police officers visited the Montgomery Street playground to do something fun with the kids. The purpose was to interact and let kids see they are just regular people.

A course was set up to give the kids a chance to see what their heroes go through during their jobs.

"It's a mini mock situation of the kids putting on some of the fire gear that we provided for them," said Jennifer Pederson, director of Ilion's Summer Rec Program. "Going through obstacles, going through what the firefighters would do, climbing through the tubs like the firefighters do."

After the challenges, the winners -- one boy and one girl -- got a ride in the bucket truck. To check out the rest of the week's festivities, stop at the Montgomery Street Playground at 9 a.m. daily.
