(WKTV) - Ilion Police called a press conference on Tuesday to discuss the fire at 60 High St. in Ilion early Tuesday.
Gene Wedemeyer, 57, was found dead in a first-floor room at the home. Officials say he barricaded himself in an upstairs apartment around 7 p.m. Monday.
Wedemeyer was armed with a large machete and knife and officials say he threw ignited Molotov cocktails out the window. He also threw a hammer, hitting two officers. Officials say he set fire in the attic of the home around 2 a.m.
Wedemeyer remained armed, closed the front door and refused to exit the burning building. Crews found Wedemeyer's remains once they entered the home.
In the press conference, Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi said the investigation into the incident is continuing. According to Parisi, when he arrived on the scene, no one else appeared to be in the home.
Two officers suffered minor injuries. Fire officials said hot spots at the home are still being extinguished.
