Inlet man accused of trying to burn father's home

(WKTV) - An Inlet man is accused of setting his father's home on fire after a domestic dispute, Herkimer Police say.

Stephen E. Carter, 58, of Inlet, is charged with arson in the second degree, a Class B felony.

According to officials, Carter, his wife and his father became involved in a verbal argument at his father's home on West German Street in the Village of Herkimer. Witnesses say around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Carter left the home. Shortly thereafter, the house became filled with smoke and the family dog awakened a family member who dialed 911.

The Herkimer Fire department responded and put out the flames. Damage was limited to a second-floor bedroom and no injuries were reported.

Carter was located by Inlet Police, who took him into custody on driving while intoxicated charges. He was brought back to Herkimer and sent to Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
