Investigation of officer-involved shooting in West Winfield underway

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New York State Police in Herkimer are currently investigating a shooting involving an officer that occurred late Friday night in West Winfield.

According to State Police, At approximately 11:28 p.m., a trooper was called to the scene of a disturbance at 371 Mill St. in the Village of West Winfield.

Upon arrival, the trooper was confronted by David A. Pope, 32, of that residence, in the side yard, who proceeded to charge at the trooper wielding a large knife.

At this time, the officer fired one round at Pope, striking him in the abdomen. He has since been transported by West Winfield Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, where he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.

Pope is currently on parole for multiple crimes including Assault, and charges against him in this case are pending.

As is routine in these type of cases, the shooting is being evaluated in conjunction with Herkimer County District Attorney, Jeff Carpenter.
