SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Two law enforcement officers were honored Monday for their work on the investigation into the homicide of New Hartford Police Officer Joseph Corr.

Town of New Hartford Chief of Police, Michael Inserra, and Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, all said they were honored to announce that on Monday, April 16, 2012, at 2 p.m., U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian presented the prestigious 2011 Wallie Howard, Jr. Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement to Town of New Hartford Police Investigator, Rick J. Salamone (Ret.) and Oneida County Sherriff's Investigator, David Nowakowski.

The award was presented to both investigators for their diligent and extensive work on New Hartford Police Officer, Joseph D. Corr's, homicide investigation.

Both investigators worked on the case from 2006 - 2010, assisting in the conviction of the murderers of Officer Corr. U.S. Attorney Hartunian presented the honor at the James Hanley Federal Building in Syracuse, where he stated this was the first occasion in the history of this award that more than one member of law enforcement was a recipient during the same year.

On October 30, 1990, Officer Wallie Howard Jr., of the Syracuse Police Department, was shot and killed during an undercover drug investigation. He was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and was attempting to purchase narcotics from two drug dealers for $42,000 in cash.

The two suspects shot and killed Officer Howard as they attempted to rob him of the money. The 15 year old shooter was too young to face the death penalty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Howard was survived by his son, daughter, the mother of both children and his own mother. The Wallie Howard Jr. Award is given annually to honor a law enforcement officer who has made extraordinary contributions to a case prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Syracuse Office.

Present at the ceremony was the mother of Wallie Howard, Jr., Delores Howard, and the parents of Joseph D. Corr, Kathy and David Corr. Retired Town of New Hartford Chief, Raymond Philo, was also in attendance to show his support.
