UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - John F. Kennedy Middle School in Utica is closing at 11 a.m. Monday as a precautionary measure when an odor was discovered in the area of the school's cafeteria.

School officials say they believe the odor came from cleaning chemicals used last work during some capital improvement projects. They say a floor in the school was torn up and worked on and when it was complete, the new floor was cleaned using the chemicals that created the odor.

They say they don't believe there are any safety concerns and just closed the school as a precautionary measure.

They say the school will open up again as planned on Tuesday morning.
