Vigil held for James St. fire victims on anniversary of fatal fire

By EMMA WRIGHT

UTICA, NY (WKTV) - Friends and family of the four people who lost their lives on September 20, 2009 gathered to remember them.

A few dozen people gathered Monday night at 102 James Street, on the one year anniversary of the fatal fire. Lighting candles in honor of the memory of the victims.

12 people escaped that late night fire. Four others were trapped inside the apartment building and died.

The building has been torn down but the memories of what happened there remain. JoAnne Cardone lost her daughter in the fire and the pain is still very real.

"It's just too much," Cardone said. "I just really hurt. And I don't think it's ever going to stop."

Victim's friends and family say they would like to see a permanent memorial built at the James Street site.
