Keep Mohawk Valley Beautiful campaign kicks off

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Keep the Mohawk Valley Beautiful kicked off its annual Great American Cleanup on Wednesday.

The aim is to transform public spaces into beautiful places. It started as a two-county organization covering just Herkimer and Oneida counties. In August, it expanded to six counties.

Those six counties align with the state economic development district for the Mohawk Valley and the U.S. Department of Commerce district -- and that's no mistake.

"The idea was, the needs we saw in Herkimer and Oneida counties exist up and down the valley," said Bob Albrecht, the chair of the board of directors. "The more counties are involved, the better chances we have for getting resources."

Nationwide, the program engaged more than 4 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities.
