Law enforcement honored for work on stopping DWI

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Law enforcement officials make it a daily mission to crack down on drunk driving.

In Herkimer County, an awards recognition breakfast honored those police officers who work hard to stop drinking and driving in the community. Officials say the award means a great deal to law enforcement officials, as most officers work late at night and miss out on times with friends and family in order to keep the community safe.

"Be above peer pressure," said Mike Edwards, STOP DWI coordinator for Herkimer County. "And please, don't ride with anyone. The speaker today, her son was killed from drinking and driving."

Matt Girouard and his friend Craig Sears were killed in a DWI accident in 2009. Matt's mother was recognized at the breakfast. She started Mac's Safe Rides, a bus service that ensures people get home safely after a night at the bars in Old Forge.
