ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man responsible for enforcing the state's new gun control and all other laws in Oneida County isn't sure how to go about doing that with regard to some portions of New York Safe Act.

Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol has spent the past three days closely examining the 39-page law. It provides for some currently legally-possessed long guns to become banned. Owners have a year to register them or sell them to an authorized dealer. But there's no way to make sure they do that.

"We don't know where these guns are because they're not registered and again I will not and I certainly don't have the manpower to start going to every person in Oneida County to see if they have a gun. I mean, we're not going to be doing that," says Maciol.

Maciol's office along has been taking about 20 calls a day since the new law passed, from people wondering how to comply with the new law.

"We are still learning exactly what the law is telling us...what the law is detailing. There's a lot of unanswered questions," says Maciol.

Maciol has been seeking guidance from the legal counsel of the State Association of County Sheriffs. The group is having their bi-annual meeting next week, at which time Maciol expects the new gun law will be a main topic of discussion.
