Lil' Diamond III unveiled as third part of canal cruises

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Gems along the Mohawk had a celebration this weekend called "Rock the Canal Weekend" and Gems owner Renee Scialdo Shevat says she hopes the event will continue annually.

With the recognition of a third Erie Canal Cruise boat, which has been dubbed "Lil' Diamond III," Scialdo Shevat feels the cruises put New York on the map for tourists.

"In this region we work with the distinctions with the region, geologically and geography," Scialdo Shevat said. "There is fundamentals. The Erie Canal in Herkimer County and Herkimer Diamond Mines and the Erie Canal is hundreds of years of ages and the Herkimer Diamonds are a half a billion years old. Those two distinctions put Central New York on a much larger stage."

The first year of operation saw about 150 passengers and this year officials expect to see 15,000 people take the canal tour.
