Little Falls Police Chief: 12 year-old sparked Ward St. fire

By WKTV News

LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A 12 year-old boy is facing arson charges after police say he started a fire that left a Little Falls family homeless.

Little Falls Police Chief Michael Masi says the boy was lightning matches and flicking them which then sparked the August 19th blaze.

The boy has been charged with arson and criminal mischief. Masi would not say if the boy lived at the home.

The Herkimer County District Attorney's office will determine if the case will be handled by probation or family court.

Fire crews from Little Falls and East Herkimer arrived on the scene of Ward Street around 9:43 a.m. and say they had the fire under control by 10:50 a.m. and had left the scene shortly after Noon.

The structure fire was across the street from a site where an intentionally-set fire destroyed three structures in March of 2010. Joseph M. Warn, 19, of Little Falls was arrested and charged back in April with five felony charges for his involvement in that March 24 fire on Ward Street.
