LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A family left homeless by a fire in Little Falls is now staying with local relatives.
Homeowner Henry Weckesser says even though he's lost everything he owns, at least his family members didn't lose each other.
According to Weckesser no one was home at the time of the fire. The blaze sparked around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
Four grandchildren were living in the home on Ward Street, they are in the custody of their grandparents. One grandson was playing in the neighborhood and called 911 when he saw the flames.
The family's three dogs also survived the fire. Weckesser says one of those dogs was in the house for two hours while flames were burning, and he was pulled out alive.
Melted siding on neighbors homes could be seen, as a result of the heat of the fire.
Weckesser replayed his morning routine over and over in his mind, but doesn't remember leaving anything on that might have started the fire. Now all he can do is thank all of the firefighters who risked their lives trying to save his home.
In March many family members watched three homes on the street go up in flames as a result of arson, never thinking they'd have to watch the same scene again, this time with their own home.
Disaster services is working to secure the scene, and plan to continue their work Friday.
"This particular house has a tremendous amount of heat damage, smoke damage, fire damage, and water damage through out," said Dino Tucciarone of Disaster Services. "What will be involved with it tonight? Mainly getting the building secured, and getting some water out of the basement and then we'll see where that takes us."
The Red Cross is assisting the family, and Weckesser says the whole community is reaching out to him and he couldn't be more grateful.
