Local Girl Scouts receive hands-on learning during mining trip

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Local Girl Scouts visited the Herkimer Diamond mines to learn more about geology first hand, Saturday.
The girls learned how to mine diamonds, extract fossils and how to crayfish gems.
They learned that the Herkimer Diamond they were mining is a 7.5 on a scale that measures how hard it is.
The experience was turned into a friendly competition as an award was granted for the winner who found the biggest diamond, and whose crayfish won the crayfish race.
"I [like to] take the girl scouts anywhere the girl scouts have never been before," said scout leader, Barbara Gannon. "It's a new opporutnity, it's fabulous and also meeting girls from other places it’s a lot of fun."
