Local Magician leaving New York

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After more than 40 years of practicing magic, local magician Jeff Sterling is leaving New York. His final local act will be Sunday before taking his show on the road, moving to Florida.

As a Schuyler native he began practicing magic at 14 years old and continued it through his life entertaining birthday parties, going to schools, he was also a magician at Old Forge's Enchanted Forest.

Known as the Court Jester of Magic, Sterling says he always travels with tricks up his sleeve and his favorite part of it all is seeing everyone's reactions.

"I think it's a great hobby because you can do it for yourself in a mirror and you can see it and enjoy practicing and practice to make it perfect but what you get the most enjoyment is when you share it, and you get to see their reaction you know," said Sterling.

He says his tricks will continue in Florida, possibly in some of the state's many theme parks.

"I meet people very easily with magic," said Sterling. "It's just a part of me, I always carry something with me."

A lot of people also know Jeff Sterling as a local activist for same sex marriage, he and his partner who passed away in April, held a monthly mens potluck dinner for decades. He says those will still continue here with someone else running them.

Jeff Sterling's final show is Sunday, January 20th at 3:30 pm. at the Don Connelly Ring 101 at Club Monarch in Yorkville.
