Local Meals on Wheels programs could take a hit

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - One local program that could face cuts if lawmakers don't strike a sequestration deal, is Meals on Wheels.

Kathy Fox, the director of the Herkimer County Office for the Aging, says her main concern amid the budget cuts, is the Meals on Wheels program.

Fox, says that in Herkimer County about 450 people receive a meal delivered to their home each day.

If the sequester goes through, a 10 percent across-the-board cut would kick in.

That means about 45 of those people would no longer receive meals.

Fox says cutting from this program would actually cost the nation more in the long run.

Other than Meals on Wheels, the Office for the Aging has other programs that would be cut as well.

Among those: Caregiver Support, Nutrition Counseling, and a healthy lifestyle program.
