Local National Guard commander receives promotion

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A local commander of the Eastern Air Defense Sector at Griffis, in Rome, received a special promotion, Saturday.

Dawn Deskins, a New York Air National Guard Colonel, was promoted to Brigadier General, and will now take a lead role in the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program for the U.S. Air National Guard.

Deskins received recognition from Governor Cuomo who said that she helped coordinate the military response during the September 11th attacks in 2001.

A Cazenovia resident, Deskins will become the 6th woman to be promoted to the General position in the Guard.

"For me personally, I am taking assignment down at the Pentagon," said the newly appointed Brigadier General. "I will be a special assistant to the Director of the Air National Guard working sexual assault prevention for the unit.

I think it's a reflection on the importance of the mission that the sector commander would be selected for a promotion out of that position, so it's just an acknowledgment of the hard work that the men and women of the Eastern Air Defense Sector do everyday."
