Local United Way holds "Day of Thanks" to show appreciation to donors

By KATRINA SMITH

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you donated to the United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica area, you might have received a surprise visit on Tuesday.

The charitable organization is kicked off its "Day of Thanks" on Tuesday, with volunteers bringing candy and balloons to some of their donors, while also having a team make phone calls to donors to say "thank you."

Organizers say the initiative is important because it's the donors who make the United Way's charitable giving possible.

"I think a lot of people think - 'here comes United Way. They're gonna' ask me for money' and we do. We raise a significant amount of money in the community and invest it in really important programs that make a difference in the community, but we're not just about that," said United Way Executive Director Brenda Episcopo.

They expect to visit 15 to 20 local businesses throughout Tuesday and the same number on Wednesday.
