Local athletes nominated to compete in 2014 Paralympic Winter Games

By SPENCER DAVIDSON

(WKTV) - Two locals appear to be heading for Sochi in March to compete in the 2014 Paralympic Games.

It was announced, Thursday, that Team USA's wheelchair curling athletes have been nominated to represent our country in Sochi, Russia for the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Team on March 7-16.

Included within the nominees are Jimmy Joseph, of New Hartford, and team leader, Mark Deperno, also of New Hartford.

Team USA finished fourth at last year's world wheelchair event in Sochi, and is currently ranked sixth in the world. They are seeking the United States' first-ever Paralympic medal in wheelchair curling.

The nominations are subject to the approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee, however it is not expected that there will be any problems sending the team to the Games.

The Wheelchair Curling Team is now the second to be nominated to the Games for Team USA, following only the nomination of the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, Wednesday.

Team Canada has won the gold medal at the past two Paralympic Winter Games for curling, but Joseph, Deperno and company will be looking to end that when they begin round robin play on March 8.
