Local business owner donates $250k to MVCC

By HILARY LANE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - One local business owner has written out a big check to help his alma matter.

Local business owner Stephen Mandia donated $250,000 to the Utica Learning Center at Mohawk Valley Community College, a gift that is the biggest contribution MVCC has received thus far in their "challenge and Opportunity" fundraising program. The college's goal is to raise $7 million overall.

"Sometimes community colleges run under the radar. A lot of times, people spend their money giving to the last college they went to or more prestigious in name institutions," Mandia said. "So I think community colleges do a great job here in the local communities."

Mandia is an alumni of MVCC and says that his education is the foundation for his success as CEO of Mandia International Trading Corporation located in Utica.

The money will go towards supporting tutoring services and ultimately expanding the tutoring center at the college.
