Local children learn how to prevent kitchen fires

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The Utica Fire Department introduced children at Jefferson Elementary School to "Chef Luigi Cook-A-Lot" on Monday to drive home this year's fire prevention week theme of preventing kitchen fires.

The goal is to speak to every kindergartner and first grader in the city.

"This is the learning age where we can capture their attention and educate them on fire prevention," Gerald Foster, Utica fire marshal, said. "They take what we tell them here in school and they actually take it home to their families and educate their families."

Two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen.
