Local families getting a helping hand this holiday thanks to volunteers in Whitesboro

By KATRINA SMITH

A crew of some 40 local helpful hands are playing Santa Claus to 91 families.

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - A total of 300 children will get a new outfit, pajamas, socks, underwear, two toys and a turkey for their family thanks to the food and gift distribution at St. Paul's Church in Whitesboro.

It's a tradition that began with just a small group of friends but has grown by leaps and bounds over the past forty years.

"So we called a few of our friends to help out with some of the families," said Joyce McKevitt, Volunteer. "So then the next year we called Catholic Charities and they said can you take a few more, and we called a few more friends, and the next year, etc, etc."

The gifts all come from volunteers and parishioners from three churches, along with first and second graders at Marcy and Westmoreland Elementary School.
