Lowered drunk driving standard recommendation faces local opposition
UTICA, NY. (WKTV)- The new recommendations from federal safety officials to lower the standard for drunk driving has drawn criticism from some Tuesday night.
The move would effectively make it easier to prove someone is driving drunk. The National Transportation Safety Board says if all 50 states changed the blood alcohol limit to .05 that thousands of lives could be saved every year.
The measure could be bad for some local businesses and bad for bartenders.
"I think the government is already ruining small businesses and this is just going to be another low blow to the economy," said
Julia Sirianni, bartender at Chesterfield.
The owner of Piggy Pats in New Harford agrees.
"When is the government going to leave us alone?" said Pat McCann owner. "Of course it's going to be bad for business."
