Local ski areas take on weather

WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Despite Tuesday's mild temperatures, Woods Valley Ski Area in Westernville had snow on some of it's slopes. Some of the ski area's trails already have a base thanks to owners preparing for any winter this weather may bring.

"We're always investing in snow making not because the windows of opportunity are shorter and we need to be able to capitalize on shorter stretches of cold weather," said Owner Tim Woods.

This past summer Woods Valley made a $200,000 investment in their infrastructure, a snow tube park and new snow making guns.

Woods says last Friday night into Saturday the new guns pumped out snow bringing piles as high as 4-5 feet, providing a base for parts of some trails.

"We knew that we had a short window of opportunity," said Woods.
"This snow has a lot of staying power, I knew when we started the first thousand feet of terrain at top we knew we'd be going back but that it would stay there even after a few days of warm weather so we calculated the risk."

Woods plans to make snow again Wednesday night when temperatures drop. He hopes to open as soon as possible, even as early as December 15th.
