Local vets lend helping hand to those affected by flood

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some local veterans came out to serve their community in Ilion in order to rebuild a porch at a home destroyed by floods, Wednesday.
The house is on Third Street near the Masonic Lodge, and the veterans removed the old porch to make room for the new one.
While the area continues to deal with the devastation of the floods and other natural disasters, having the presence of these heroes can be a good way to help lift the spirits of those affected.
"There's a need in this area for veterans to give back to be able to engage with the community," said Scott McCumber, Regional Disaster Liaison. "Today, eight veterans are here. We are clearing the porch out for the homeowner, that way they can get a new safer porch built and taken care of."

This job is also viewed as a way to help these veterans re-assimilate into the community after long tours away from home.
