Longtime Oneonta City Clerk announces resignation

ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneonta City Clerk James Koury has announced his resignation.

In a letter, Koury says he will leave office sometime in July.

"I have had many fond memories during my tenure, but I must say the most memorable was when same sex marriage was legalized in New York State. Being a gay man and the City Clerk at the time, it was a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to arrange for City Hall to be open to have same sex couples get married on that day."

Koury says he regrets not being able to conduct some of the ceremonies himself.

Oneonta was the first local city to open its doors so that gay couples could marry on this first day of the new state law is 2011.
