Lewis County father sentenced in son's death

LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Town of Watson man was sentenced in Lewis County Court Friday for shooting and killing his son with a 20-gauge shotgun in May. It happened on Stillwater Road.
Lyle Devoy, Sr., then 56, and his 29-year-old son, Lyle Devoy, Jr., had an argument. Friday in court, we learned it was not an isolated incident.
"There was a long history of confrontation between Mr. Devoy and his son. Not to speak ill of the dead, but the son was problematic for various members of the family for a quite a long time," said Devoy's defense attorney, Gary Miles.
Miles says many members of the Devoy family were supportive of Devoy Sr. The judge said many wrote letters. Even the prosecutor said she will not oppose his release if and when he is paroled.
"As long as he is responsible within the department of corrections, absolutely not. His behavior since that time deserves that recommendation from our office," said Lewis County District Attorney Leanne Moser.
Moser was also moved by the remorse Devoy demonstrated in a letter he wrote to her -- and that his attorney didn't know about until his sentencing Friday morning in court.
"Saying that you need to evaluate your actions before they're done is probably the most telling of this event, because that's what everybody needs to take as a lesson from this. Before things get out of hand, before things cannot be turned back people need to stop and think," said Moser.
Devoy will spend the next 17 and a half years to life in state prison for his son's death. He pled guilty the day his trial was set to begin.
