Macy's employee arrested for producing fraudulent gift cards

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - An employee of the Macy's store in the Sangertown Square Mall was arrested for allegedly using fraudulent gift cards that she produced and then used to purchase items from the store.

According to Officer Christopher J. Burns, Shantae L. Nelson, age 22 of Utica, was arrested on Thursday.  The arrest was the culmination of an investigation by Macy's corporate Loss Prevention investigators.  It is alleged that Nelson, who was employed as an Associate at the store, made several fraudulent returns while working her shift.  The fraudulent return amounts were then placed onto gift cards that could be used at Macy's.   Store records show that Nelson then used the gift cards to purchase clothing and other items for herself only after marking the original prices of the items down to a minimal amount.  The dollar amount of the stolen merchandise was in excess of $700.00.

Nelson was arrested and charged with four counts of Falsifying Business Records, a Class E Felony and Petit Larceny, a Class A Misdemeanor.  Nelson was released and will appear in the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
