Major announcement expected this week in 1972 homicide

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Oneida County District Attorney's Office is expected to make a major announcement regarding a 39-year-old homicide in the city of Utica this week.

Joanne Pecheone was a teenager walking home from St. Francis DeSales School in January 1972, when someone brutally raped and killed her, leaving her body in the woods off South Park Drive in east Utica.

Although no major leads would surface for decades, Pecheone's murder remained the number one case for the Oneida County District Attorney's cold case squad since the office re-opened the case in 2002, when it was hoped new technology would help solve the crime.

District Attorney Scott McNamara says his office will make a major announcement Friday afternoon regarding Pecheone's murder.
