UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Peacemaker Program held their annual Community Peacemaker Award Breakfast at the Radisson Thursday.

The goal is to recognize area residents who are working to create a more peaceful community.

The Peacemaker Program volunteers provide dispute resolution programs and child advocacy services to help quell conflicts before they escalate within the community.

In addition to distributing awards at the breakfast, a keynote address highlighting the importance of conflict resolution was delivered by Oneida County Supreme court Justice Erin Gall.

"The benefits of mediation are that the individuals involved in the conflict have an ability to be honest with themselves, talk among themselves, and control their destiny a little more," said Gall.

The 2012 Community Peacemaker Award was given to Maria Elena Santos for her work with the Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program.

She works with 7th-12th graders to help them graduate from high school and achieve their future goals.
