Man accused in recent Village of Herkimer burglaries

(WKTV) - A Mohawk man faces charges after Herkimer Police say he was involved in recent burglaries in the village.

John M. Heiland Jr., 23, of Mohawk, is charged with two counts of burglary in the second degree and two counts of petit larceny.

According to officials, Heiland and another suspect are alleged to have entered houses on Steuben Avenue and Marion Street during the day. The two would knock on doors to see if anyone answered. The suspects found an unlocked door to enter and allegedly steal property, which police say they then pawned for cash.

Police were helped by neighbors who gave detailed descriptions of the suspects and a vehicle. The second suspect is still being sought. Police are also tracking down the stolen property.

Heiland was sent to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
