Man dies after hitting tree in snowmobile crash

FORESTPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man is dead following a snowmobile accident in the Town of Forestport late Friday night.

According to New York State Police, 23-year-old Richard Petty, of Pine Bush, NY, was riding a snowmobile with a group of seven others.

Authorities say the group was riding east on River Road when they came upon a right hand curve.

Due to unsafe speed, police say three of the riders, including the victim who was riding solo, failed to negotiate the curve and went off the shoulder.

Petty became airborne after striking a snow embankment along the shoulder, was ejected and struck a tree.

He suffered a massive head injury. Petty later died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

An investigating into the accident is taking place.
