ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - One man is dead after an eight-hour standoff in Ilion overnight.

Ilion police and state fire investigators say Gene Wedemeyer, 57, was found in the rear of the first floor of this home at 60 High St.

Officials say he barricaded himself in the upstairs apartment around 7 p.m. Monday night.

As police made attempts to negotiate with Wedemeyer, he became more aggressive throughout the night, throwing ignited Molotov cocktails out the window.

He armed himself with a large machete and knife.

Wedemeyer also threw a hammer hitting two officers, before setting fire in the attic of the building around 2 a.m.

Police say throughout this incident Wedemeyer remained armed, closed the front door and refused to exit the burning building.

When crews finally got inside the building they found Wedemeyer's remains on the first floor.

State fire investigators and local police continue to investigate this incident. Catholic Charities and the American Red Cross are assisting the residents who were evacuated from homes nearby.
