Man involved in New York Mills standoff charged with felonies

By ANDREW DONOVAN

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man accused of causing a police standoff Monday afternoon is now facing felony charges and was arraigned in court Friday night.

He was also released from the hospital Friday and was taken into police custody immediately after.

The five-hour standoff took place at Carolyn Courts Apartments in New York Mills and ultimately came to a peaceful conclusion Monday night.

James Mogle, 54, is charged with 3 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, 2 in the third degree and 1 in the first degree, as well as a misdemeanor for resisting arrest.

Police responded to a call at around 3:15 Monday afternoon. Officials say Mogle barricaded himself inside Apartment G at Carolyn Courts Apartments with a handgun and a long gun.

Mogle threatened police and told them, "If you try and come in in here I will put a bullet in your head.. and if I see other policemen or cars I am going to shoot them." On Friday, Mogle claimed he did not say "any of that stuff." The judge then suggested Mogle wait to speak with his attorney.

His daughter made the initial call to police after Mogle allegedly threw papers and personal property at his daughter earlier in the day and was visibly distressed after an altercation with an acquaintance.

"There was alcohol involvement on his part and distraught over personal relationship that went south today," says Captain Coots.

A SWAT team was on the scene, as well as the State Police Mobile Response Team, New York Mills Police, New Hartford and Yorkville Police, as well as the Oneida County Sheriff's Department.

Residents living in Carolyn Courts Apartments were not allowed to return home between approximately 3:15 and 8:15 p.m. As of Monday night, all business resumed as usual.

Mogle was sent to the Oneida County Jail on $100,000 bail and will be back in court February 1st. New York Mills Court will be appointing him a public defender.
