Man jumps from second story window to flee burning building in Utica

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Fire Department officials say when firefighters arrived on the scene of a fire on Warren St. early Saturday morning, they found a man who was badly burned laying on the street.

Utica Deputy Fire Chief Mark Ambrose tells News Channel 2 that man had to be intubated and was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for treatment.

The fire happened around 6:00 A.M. Saturday morning at a three story structure at 810 Warren St. which is at the corner of Sunset Avenue.

Deputy Chief Ambrose says the building appears to have been vacant and the victim may have been inside illegally and lit a fire to stay warm.

Ambrose says the second and thirds floors did collapse from the fire and walls were giving way.

The building is expected to be a total loss.

As far as a cause, Ambrose says it's too early in the investigation to tell, and he says investigators are still waiting to interview the victim at the hospital.

Also no word on what, if any charges will be filed.
