Marcellus and Utica shale region added to "places to save" list

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - "Seven to save" is the name of a not-for-profit effort in Otsego County dedicated to preserving historic properties.

The emphasis is on parks, waterfronts and landscapes, something the group thinks would be harmed by hydrofracking.

On Friday, the organization added the Marcellus and Utica shale region to the list of seven places to save this year. They say there are too many unknowns about the natural gas drilling process and the area has too much to lose.

"There are places that rely on heritage, beauty, passive and active recreational and those are among the underpinnings of natural resources," said Tania Werbizky of the Preservation League of New York State. "They are very much at risk with what is proposed to date as far as hydrofracking."

Proponents of hydrofracking say the pros outweigh the cons.

Since 1999, the Preservation League of New York State has named 77 places to save.
