Marcy Elementary Principal shaves his head after students exceed reading expectations

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - As you walked through the halls of Marcy Elementary School around 2:35 p.m. Friday afternoon, it wasn't the sound of history lessons or even a physical education class that you heard coming from the gymnasium.

Instead, what you heard was chanting.

"Shave, shave, shave, shave, shave," one could hear in unison coming from the gym, as Principal Bob Service sat clothed in leopard print smock, waiting to hear a new sound - the sound of an electric razor inch closer to his scalp.

Parents as reading partners wrapped up the day prior, so on Friday, Services had his head shaved after the students not only met but exceeded his challenge of reading 90,000 minutes at home in March.

Students surprised him and logged a whopping 124,000 minutes total.

He was a good sport about the whole thing and hopes his little bet will encourage students to read on their own, all year round.
