Marcy woman forced to sell property in eminent domain battle with MV Edge

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Marcy woman has spent her golden years fighting her own government for land that's been in her family for more than 100 years and on Thursday, she lost that battle.

Now, she and her family are left heartbroken.

Margaret Farmer is battle worn, and broken. She needed assistance from family members Thursday to go to a local law office and sign what amounts to a surrender. Her daughter, Karen, is in agony as she tries to support her mother through the process.

"It's been devastating," Karen Farmer said.

Farmer signed a purchase agreement with Mohawk Valley EDGE for 56 acres of land across from her little red farm house on Hazard Road in Marcy.

She didn't want to sell, but if she didn't, the state would have taken it through the process of eminent domain anyway, and the offer price, which has already gone down, would have plummeted even further.

"It's non-winnable for her," Karen Farmer said. "So to end it at this point, it's been going on a long time."

Officials with Mohawk Valley EDGE said they need the property to make adjoining land more appealing to chip-fab plants, which they've been trying to lure to the area for years.

Officials with EDGE say that it is vacant land and claim that they did offer farmer a fair price. For Margaret Farmer, though, it was never about money.

"It's private property," her daughter said. "Family property that's been in the family for years. She's lived there all her life."

Signing of the purchase offer on Thursday ends the long, arduous eminent domain process and turns this into a private sale - a private sale, with an unwilling seller.
